What does it mean to push the envelope?

Pushing the envelope is a phrase used to mean to move past the limits of what has already been done or whatever is the accepted standard of the current time. In the workplace, it could be used to refer to someone who is doing some really great work that far exceeds and is far better than what has been done in the past.
