What does “shortchange” mean?

To “shortchange” someone can mean 2 things. If you owe someone money but give them less than what is actually owed to them then that that could be considered “shortchanging” that person. The other meaning is when someone treats another person badly or unfairly by holding back something of value – whether it’s time, money, or even kindness and consideration, etc.
