What does the phrase “fly by night” mean?

The phrase “fly by night”, as commonly used by people, is used to describe people or things that are questionable or seem unreliable and suspicious. The word can be used to describe people, businesses, websites, and basically anything that seems suspicious.

The phrase “fly by nighter” itself originally described people who would try to escape their debts by running away at night, hence the phrase “fly by nighter”.
