What is a “topper”?

In India, the word “topper” is used quite often to refer to people who did really well in a class or a test when compared to other people who were also in the same class or who took the same test. Depending on how many other people were in the same class or who took the same test, a “topper” could be in the top 5 people, or even the top 100 people if 1,000’s of people also took the same test.
