What does the phrase “be the bigger man” mean?

To “be the bigger man” basically means to be the more mature, self-controlled person in a situation or argument. It’s used when comparing one person to another, or when giving advice to someone and telling them to “be the bigger man” and act with more self control than the other person that one is in conflict with.
