What is the meaning of the phrase “at the end of my rope”?

When someone says that they are at “the end of my rope”, it means that they are in a situation in which they feel helpless and lost. This situation could exist because there’s a lot of difficult things happening in their life, and they now perceive the situation to be hopeless. The “rope” is sort of a symbolic for some rope that they are using to hold them up for support – so being at the end of their rope means that they have very little support left.

Example of “at the end of my rope” in a sentence

"Joe lost his job and was evicted from his
apartment. He felt like he was at the end of his
rope."
