The longest earthquake on record occurred in Alaska (in an area called Prince William Sound) in March of 1964. The earthquake lasted just under 4 minutes long.

Most earthquakes are over very quickly, and they last for less than a minute long. But, many big earthquakes also have aftershocks which can go on for longer periods of time.
