What is the meaning of the phrase “lay low”?

The phrase “lay low” is used when telling someone to not make themselves too noticeable or to stand out in any way. The reasons for telling someone to “lay low” can be anything. It may be because the person who needs to “lay low” is in some sort of trouble and does not want to be caught or because the person is annoying an authority figure, so he/she needs to “lay low” before that authority figure takes some dramatic action like firing the person from a job or hurting the person in some other way.
