What does it mean to “clock out”?

People use the phrase “clock out” when they leave work. So, when a person leaves work to go home, they often say they are “clocking out”.

Tom: "Hey Bob, could we go over those files right now."

Bob: "Tom, I'm actually going to clock out right now.  
We'll have to go over the files tomorrow."
